Uncle Matt!

Isn't it beautiful! Yes, that is the burger that Cayleigh will now have to buy me. In exchange I will get her a baby burger (for a fraction of the cost =D).

I understand that I am now an uncle^3. Being an uncle has some neat perks, I get to spend time with Caden and December (and now Cayleigh) without having to change their diapers, I get to play with them when they're happy and walk away when they're not. Most importantly they don't usually keep me up late or wake me up early (except for December, but like Zoe she's cute enough to get away with it).

On to other easily-related-to-food news. OJ Simpson has been found guilty of a variety of offenses and could serve life in prison. If you were barely acquitted of murder wouldn't you avoid going back to court at all costs? Not OJ, getting his sports memorabilia back was worth the risk!

Matt: This was OJs second mistake.
Detective: What was his first?
Matt: *.*Matt puts his sunglasses on*.* He killed somebody.

I stole that from a really cheesy CSI episode. I just noticed that I have included fast food in yet another blog post; I think there's something wrong with me. What else is going on these days...? Oh yah the bailout. Now I have not educated myself on this issue but I get the feeling that the bailout is a bad idea. Are we capitalists or socialists? This is at best a short-term fix, obviously there is some major problem and this is a 700 Billion Dollar band-aid.

Example of why government should let the market sort this out:

Government Fix:
Government in a hasty attempt to solve the crisis agrees to sell *the most lucrative parts* of troubled Wachovia Bank to Citigroup for only $1.00 per share and the FDIC agrees to pay Citigroup for "losses" that it will assume.

Market Fix:
Wells Fargo Bank offers $7.00 per share to buy the whole bank, profitable and unprofitable parts, without government assistance.

Conclusion:
The U.S. Government is incompetent and acting out of paranoia. Citigroup is, i think, suing Wells Fargo (and Wachovia???) saying "we had a deal with the government.

I saw the Colbert report for a few minutes last night. He interviewed the author of Shock Doctrine (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/10/03/naomi-klein-on-the-colbert-report/)

I did think it was ironic that the author decried the government, saying that they take advantage of the people in times of crisis, that the people simply hand their trust to the government, and that this is how the Americans got in the mess they were (naturally, I doubt this author carries around a list of the democrats who voted to go into Iraq... [COUGH]Bid[COUGH]en[COUGH])

Anywhoo, she then went on to say how Obama would put the people's money in infrastructure.

I got the sudden and distinct impression that taking advantage of a people in crisis is bad - well, if you're conservative. If you're an inconsistent endorsing-baby-slaughtering attended-black-supremacist-church for twenty years but [somehow] didn't know it, then it's all cool. Cause THAT GUY won't do it.

I digress.

Bottom line: Sometimes when people get in a car accident, someone else has to clean up the mess:

"The fundamental dynamic is this: Washington and Wall Street helped people buy houses they could not afford on such a massive scale that simply letting the lenders and debtors take their lumps would arguably do grave harm to the economy. They will take some lumps (Wall Street isn't exactly a hot job market right now), but most of the losses will be "socialized," or spread out among everyone who pays taxes. This includes those who exercised restraint during the bubble. That's how it is."

On the bright side, the US government could make money if they buy up bad mortgages and sit on them (cf. 80's).
